The Witching Season
The last time I trick-or-treated, I was probably dressed as Freddy Krueger. I was Freddy for at least 3 years in a row, which is odd. No one seemed to bat an eye. I wore the costume to school, to junior high dances, etc.
I mean, just around Halloween. I wasn’t walking into homeroom with my bladed glove and fedora in the middle of April.
But still . . . an eleven year old kid, going to school dressed as an undead child murderer. I also ran for student council on a very Freddy and Jason-centric platform. My understanding of middle school political organizations was feeble, to say the least.
But there came a point when I was the tallest kid knocking on doors, holding his bag open for some Gobstoppers or Smarties. It’s like being the last one hanging around after the party is over. And you’re dressed like a child murderer.
Over the years, life got in the way. There for a few years, some friends and I would throw a huge Halloween party, giving me an excuse - an obligation - to find a costume. But those parties, as all parties do, evaporated eventually.
But Halloween is still king.
I don’t have a costume this year. I won’t be going to any parties. We never get trick-or treaters. For me? It’s all horror books and movies, all the time. And on November 1st? It will still be all horror books and movies all the time. Let’s not kid ourselves.
I’ve still got my plastic Freddy Krueger glove, but how are you celebrating? Are you dressing up? Let me see your costumes!
Of course, I’m binging. One movie per day (at least!). One of the more exciting ones is a small, but harrowing film about possession and summoning demons. This one really got under my skin. Check it out, if you can.
I have a treat for you. I’ve become obsessed with making YouTube playlists.
Hear me out.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how much bizarre detritus there is floating around on the internet. I’ve collected a handful of things for you here - classic movies, trailers, and … other stuff.
I’d like to update here 2-3 times per week, but what would you like to see? Let me know in the comments.
Here’s to life,
